general
A data model / information model sums up all information needs and information rules that are part of it. We use the term information needs when information is needed to keep a part of the business process going. Data models / Information models are used for the specification of databases and of standard software and of software still to be developed. For standard software we use it to check whether all information needs are supported by the software. The data model can also be used in contract negotiations. In system development projects we use data models for a number of things. E.g. for establishing a companywide deployable database structure, for the specification of functionality (using the information rules that are part of the model), for checking the completeness of information systems, for agreeing on terms relevant and in line with the information processing of other parts of the business process.
In the workshop the participant learns to make a data model including information rules. The emphasis is on learning the modeling concepts, e.g. the choosing of the right entity types. Next to that topics are covered, like complexity of models, time aspects, and how to use the data model to design a database.
For becoming more skillful in data modeling there are extensive exercises in making the models.
